The second quarter of 2026 marked an important milestone in Mokpiera’s journey from vision to action. During this period, we launched our first cohort of participants, strengthened relationships with traditional leaders, explored the principles behind the Golden Root approach, and learned from successful local entrepreneurs across Northern Ghana. We also responded to communities affected by flooding and celebrated a significant partnership with the Meaalofa Foundation, whose generous donation of 15 desktop computers will strengthen our digital skills programme. Launching the First Cohort
Laying the foundation with limited means, unlimited will
Every journey has a starting point, and for Mokpiera, ours began with paperwork, patience, and a rented room. Before we could welcome a single participant, we had to lay the groundwork: securing our official registration, finding a rental facility we could call home, and walking through school compounds to talk to young people about what we were building. That outreach paid off — by the end of it, we had successfully registered about 30 beneficiaries ready to begin.
But registration and enthusiasm alone don’t run a programme. Behind every training session, every field trip, and every meal shared with our cohort was a quieter, harder question: how do we fund this? Running costs added up quickly, and one activity in particular tested us early — our planned trip into Ghana’s northern sector to explore the golden root, a journey central to our sustainable livelihoods approach. The Upper West Region, where much of this work is rooted, is a place shaped by long dry seasons, guinea savannah landscapes, and communities where roughly 80% of the economically active population depend on agriculture in some form. It’s a region rich in resilience but often under-resourced — which meant our funding gap wasn’t just an internal challenge, it mirrored the very scarcity many of our beneficiaries live with daily.
We didn’t wait for perfect conditions. We started with what we had, stretched every cedi, leaned on goodwill, and made the northern trip happen. Slowly, support began to follow the work — a sign that when you show up consistently, resources have a way of finding you.
This is how Mokpiera’s first cohort began: not with abundance, but with the conviction that 30 young people were worth building something for.
A New Partnership with the Meaalofa Foundation
Some gifts do more than meet a need. They restore hope and remind us that meaningful change is possible when people choose to believe in others. This quarter, the Meaalofa Foundation in Germany, through its representative Richard, donated fifteen desktop computers to Mokpiera. During his visit to Ghana, Richard also generously presented us with an additional laptop.
This support breathes new life into the Golden Root, our ICT Centre, where young people develop digital skills, entrepreneurial thinking, and the confidence to shape their own futures.
To the Meaalofa Foundation and Richard, thank you for seeing potential where others see limitation. Your generosity is not measured by the number of computers you gave, but by the countless dreams they will help unlock and the lives they will quietly transform for years to come.
Engaging Traditional Leaders
Before any programme can truly belong to a community, it must first be welcomed by the people who carry that community’s trust, its chiefs. Even though our baseline research had already given us a good sense of the ground we were stepping onto, we knew data could never replace a proper introduction. So we returned, this time not to observe but to speak directly with the very leaders whose blessing would shape everything ahead.
We sat with chiefs from six communities, sharing openly what had brought us there and what we hoped to build together. What met us was not hesitation but warmth. These chiefs listened closely, asked thoughtful questions, and responded with genuine joy at the thought of young people in their communities being given new opportunities.
That afternoon reminded us that lasting change rarely begins with permission alone. It begins with respect, patience, and a willingness to sit, listen, and be truly present.
The Magic Behind the Golden Root
The Golden Root represents the foundation of Mokpiera’s vision to create lasting transformation among young people through knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurship. We chose the Golden Root as a symbol because a strong foundation is essential for growth. Just as a tree depends on its roots for strength and survival, young people need the right skills, mindset, and opportunities to build successful futures.
At the heart of the Golden Root is our ICT Centre, which goes beyond traditional computer training. While we equip our beneficiaries with in-demand digital skills such as computer literacy, digital tools, and technology-based skills, we also focus on developing their entrepreneurial mindset.
Through entrepreneurship training and basic business knowledge, participants learn how to identify opportunities, develop ideas, manage resources, understand customers, and build sustainable businesses. Our goal is not only to prepare young people for employment but also to inspire them to become creators of opportunities within their communities.
The magic behind the Golden Root lies in combining technology with entrepreneurship. By nurturing both technical abilities and business thinking, Mokpiera is empowering a new generation of young innovators who can use digital skills to solve problems, create jobs, and contribute to sustainable development in their communities.
Learning from Local Entrepreneurs
As part of the Golden Root programme, Mokpiera introduced participants to the realities of entrepreneurship through practical learning experiences with local business owners in the Upper West Region. During our pilot programme, participants visited selected businesses to understand how ideas are transformed into sustainable enterprises.
The visits provided an opportunity for participants to learn directly from entrepreneurs who are creating value within their communities. Some of the businesses visited included a tomato processing factory, a shea butter production enterprise, a local soap manufacturing business, a food processing company, and small scale agribusinesses involved in farming and value addition.

At each location, entrepreneurs shared their journeys, challenges, and lessons learned while building their businesses. They introduced participants to their Standard Operating Procedures, explaining how they manage production, maintain quality, serve customers, handle finances, and organize daily operations.

The experience helped participants understand that successful businesses require more than just good ideas. They require discipline, planning, consistency, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous improvement. By interacting with local entrepreneurs, participants gained practical knowledge and inspiration to think creatively about opportunities within their own communities.
Through the Golden Root, Mokpiera is nurturing young people to see entrepreneurship as a pathway to innovation, independence, and sustainable development.

Responding to Flood Emergencies
When the Waters Rose, We Showed Up
When the rains came, they came without warning, without mercy, and without regard for how much a family had already worked to build. Homes filled with water within hours. Farmlands disappeared beneath brown, restless floods. In the Upper West Region, families who had spent seasons nurturing crops and shelter watched much of it slip away in a single night.
Mokpiera could not stand by and simply witness this. We mobilized quickly, gathering what support we could and moving into affected communities to offer whatever relief was within our reach. We listened to mothers who had lost stored food meant to carry their households through the dry season. We sat with elders who spoke of homes they had lived in for decades, now unlivable. And we tried, in whatever small way possible, to remind people that they were not forgotten.
This was not about grand gestures. It was about presence, about showing up when things felt unbearable, and about proving that community still means something even when nature turns unkind. For an organization still finding its footing, this moment tested us, but it also revealed something important: that compassion, even in its earliest and most limited form, is powerful enough to bring light into someone’s darkest days.
We reduce unsafe migration by empowering marginalized youth through transformational education, digital skills, and climate-friendly agriculture , guided by our Golden Tree approach.
